Andrew was first appointed as a consultant in 2002. In July 2008 he moved to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. This post has allowed him to further his interest in Knee Surgery. His elective NHS practice is now exclusively knee surgery.
Andrew was educated in London at St George's Hospital Medical School. He moved to Manchester to undertake his basic surgical training. He then undertook a years research in knee surgery at the Royal Preston Hospital before his advanced training in the North West of England. His last year of training was spent on two internationally renown fellowships.
1) Melbourne, Australia This concentrated on the treatment of sportsmen of all levels and their injuries, especially meniscal (cartilage) and ligament (ACL) problems.
2) Wrightington Hospital, Wigan This has a world reputation for its work on joint replacement surgery and partial joint replacement surgery.
Andrew's NHS elective practice is exclusively devoted to knee surgery. He has extensive experience of arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery for the treatment of meniscal (cartilage) tears, both removal and repair. He treats ligament (ACL) ruptures/tears using either hamstring tendons or patella tendon to reconstruct them.
The young arthritic knee poses a great problem for those people who wish to remain active. There are many possible treatments including Cartilage Regeneration, Ostotomies to realign the knee and partial (Unicompartmental) joint replacement. These all have differing indications and benefits and have to be tailored to the needs of the patient. Andrew has experience of all these.
The patello-femoral joint (knee cap) is often the cause of great problems and pain. It has been the subject of much research in recent years. Andrew undertakes procedures to realign, release and reconstruct the surrounding structures as required.
Total Knee Replacement remains the mainstay of treatment of advanced arthritis of the knee. Andrew has extensive experience of these, even in the most advanced cases. |
