Phil Turner is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport and The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle. He was appointed in 1989 and has wide experience in all aspects of trauma and orthopaedic surgery. His practice is now concentrated on surgery of the knee and sports related trauma. He trained in the North West and has visited many knee units in the UK, Europe and America.
His interests encompass arthroscopic knee surgery, meniscus repair, primary and revision knee ligament reconstruction, articular cartilage repair, surgery for the younger patient with arthritis, osteotomy around the knee, partial and total knee replacement and revision knee replacement. Within knee surgery he has a specific interest in the patello-femoral joint where the unit has pioneered several new surgical techniques.
He provides a knee surgery and sports injury service to professional and elite athletes, including Premiership and League football teams and rugby teams.
He is actively involved in research, audit, recording of results and outcomes of surgery and in training and education.
In addition to his clinical work, he is also a past training programme director and now holds the post of Head of the School of Surgery in the North Western Deanery. Nationally, he has contributed to the development of the orthopaedic training curriculum and is an examiner for the FRCS (Orth). He has recently been awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. He holds a national bronze award for clinical excellence.
