Julie graduated from the University of Salford in 1997, gaining a 1st Class BSc (Hons) degree in podiatry. She then joined Salford PCT and moved to Stockport PCT in 1998, as a podiatrist. Here she developed an interest in biomechanics and management of patients with 'high risk' foot conditions.
Julie began private practice in 1999, with Acorn House Podiatry Clinic, operating from Davenport, Stockport. Biomechanical assessment with video gait analysis is on offer, along with the prescription and supply of bespoke orthoses as required. Other services and treatment available include: vascular and neurological assessment, nail surgery, diabetes/rheumatology assessment and care, diagnosis and treatment of nail pathology, wound care and routine chiropody.
Julie was initially seconded to Stockport PCT's orthopaedic assessment service in 2004, as a clinical biomechanical specialist in the assessment and management of foot and ankle pathology, where she currently works part-time. Here she triages patients for potential surgical intervention, provides prescriptions for orthoses and refers to other healthcare professionals. She is the PCT clinical representative for the development of foot and ankle clinical pathways and is actively engaged in formulating these alongside Mr. Dalal (consultant orthopaedic surgeon).
Her long standing interest in playing badminton led to a desire to increase her knowledge, especially of sporting problems. This led with a Master of Science Degree in sports injury and therapy from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2003. Her dissertation was entitled: A randomised control trial to investigate the use of orthoses in anterior knee pain.
During her time she has forged links with other healthcare professionals within the North West. She has been invited to give presentations about biomechanics, the high risk foot and how podiatrists can impact on peoples' lives. She gives updates to other professional groups such as physiotherapists, nurses, and GP practices. At her private clinic she provides placements for medical students currently studying at Manchester University.
